About Winnipeg Pride

On August 2, 1987, two hundred and fifty people march in Winnipeg's first Pride Day celebration. That first Pride Parade was a brave step - a tentative venture out of a dark closet that for too long held our spirits captive. Legally and socially, the world was still an oppressive and homophobic place. A few still-shamed people in that first parade even wore paper bags on their heads to cover their identities.

Today we gather to enjoy ourselves, to celebrate our victories, and to remember there is so much to be proud of. Pride has been celebrated annually since then and has evolved from a one day event into a 10-day festival filled with pride, confidence, fun, colour, music, laughter and optimism, and it attracts thousands.

We invite everyone from far and wide to join our welcoming community and celebrate Pride in our great city at the heart of the continent.
